Natural monument, Samgori zelkova
August 21, 2026There is Samgori zelkova, a natural monument, in Kaesong City, which is famous for the historical relics from the period of Koryo Kingdom (918-1392) as well as Kaesong Koryo insam.
The tree was planted around 1590. Although it is over 400 years old, it is still in good condition.
It is 17.5 metres tall, 7.5 metres round at the root neck, 6.7 metres wide at the chest height and 26 metres wide at the crown.
Three branches grow out from the main trunk at the height of two metres, and they spread lots of small branches to form a wide crown in the shape of an umbrella.
As a natural monument which is of academic significance and adds beauty to the surrounding scenery, the tree serves as a good resting place for tourists visiting Pagyon Falls, a scenic spot famous since ancient times, and passersby.
