The Russian Foreign Ministry called the Japanese ambassador to Russia on August 18 to strongly protest against the Japanese authorities’ reckless anti-Russian remarks related to President Vladimir Putin’s visit to the Southern Kurils.

Mikhail Galujin, vice-minister of Foreign Affairs, said that Russia’s dominion and jurisdiction over the Southern Kurils are unchangeable and that the dominion over the region was transferred to Russia after the Second World War and settled by the relevant agreements between the allies and the UN Charter.

All the attempts of the Japanese side to directly or indirectly question the obvious reality are illegal and can never be tolerated, he stressed.

He also clarified the stand of the Russian government to take relevant countermeasures as regards the fact that Japan supports the Ukrainian authorities while continuing to follow the Western group’s policy of sanctions against Russia.
