Chonju Rock is a rock of fantastic shape which stands on the middle slope of Thakki Peak, about 420 metres above sea level, in Mt Myohyang, a superb scenic beauty.

The rock was formed as gneiss of the Archaeozoic was washed and broken by rain and wind for a long time. It has long been called so as it looks like a pillar supporting heaven. 

It looks like a tall and lean rock pillar in the distance and is about 60 metres high, some 10 metres wide and 30 metres round.

The front of the rock resembles a tower.

The back of the rock is connected with a mountain ridge and is merely about 20 metres high, and the surface of the rock seems to have been smoothed artificially.

Its upper surface is covered with green moss and a pine tree grows on the top of the rock, offering a wonderful view.

Chonju Rock carries an old tale that Tangun, founder king of Ancient Joson, the first state in Korea, practised archery every day on a rock in the middle part of Hyangno Peak of Mt Myohyang with the curious rock as the target, and a legend that a powerful young man preserved the exquisite scenery of the mountain by stopping the rain hole of the sky with the rock in the rainy season.

It is of academic significance and is preserved well as a natural monument adding beauty to Mt Myohyang.
