China demands Japan break with militarism

September 7, 2026

A spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry demanded Japan fully break with militarism at a press conference on September 2.

Saying that Japan accepted all the paragraphs of the Potsdam Declaration and officially signed the surrender documents confirming the acts of war of aggression in September 1945, he stated that such historical conclusion cannot be distorted and a challenge to the postwar international order is intolerable.

The current ruling authorities of Japan, however, are idolizing the class-A war criminals, distorting and beautifying their crimes of aggression, accelerating the country’s re-militarization and speeding up the revision of the “pacifist constitution”, while avoiding the mention of the historical liability for the crimes, he decried.

They are worsening the relations with almost all the neighbouring countries, openly interfering in the internal affairs of other countries and even posing a military threat to them, he noted, asserting that Japan’s neo-militarism is threatening again the peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.

He stressed that China strongly demands the Japanese authorities honour the international commitments specified in the surrender documents, break with militarism and take practical actions to gain the confidence of the neighbouring countries in Asia and the international community.
