The Ministry of Fisheries has actively introduced methods of fish farming and aquaculture of various forms and developed them on a large scale.

The work to create artificial spawning places in rivers, lakes and reservoirs has been conducted as an all-people campaign to provide provinces, cities and counties across the country with ecological environments favourable for the natural breeding of fishes, making it possible to stock the rivers, lakes and reservoirs with a large number of fries to raise.

Fish farming and seed fish production units across the country have built new fish ponds and improved the nutrition management of fries.

While securing seed fishes including rainbow trout, catfish, mandarin fish and grey mullet and conducting the collection and hatching of eggs and the growing of fries in a scientific and technical way, they have taken measures to solve the feed problem so as to increase fish production.

The Yomju Youth Fish Farm, Unsan Catfish Farm and other fisheries and fish farming bases in North Phyongan Province have introduced advanced fish farming methods and raised the level of scientific and intensive fish farming, thus increasing the fry production 1.2 times as compared to the same period of last year.

The ministry is also conducting cage-net fish farming on a full scale. It is intensifying technical guidance and assistance for the units engaged in such farming in provinces, cities and counties so as to make them introduce scientific fish farming methods to suit the physiological and ecological features of fishes. Millions of fries are now growing at cage-net fish farms across the country.

In order to consolidate the material and technical foundations for cage-net fish farming in the sea, it has taken measures to provide the Ongjin West Sea Fish Farm with materials necessary for the making and repair of cage nets and steadily developed and introduced advanced fish farming methods related to early artificial egg collection and fry breeding in contact with the academy of fisheries.

It also inspires seaweed production units to employ advanced methods of farming, including mixed culture, on a large scale for improving the ecological environment of their waters and to widely introduce rational cultivation methods for increasing the survival rate of seaweeds.
