Farm benefits from fish farming in paddy fields

September 12, 2026

Fish farming in paddy fields is very effective as it helps farmers increase grain production without using fertilizer at all and raise fish.

So it has been introduced into all parts of the country to suit the specific conditions of regions and units, bringing benefits to them.

The Samjigang Farm in Jaeryong County introduced it into five hectares of paddy fields this year and landed catfish, each of which weighed 850 grams on average and over two kilograms at maximum.

Ri Hye Suk, manageress of the farm, proudly said that it means her farm would catch over 40 tons of catfish per hectare and that if it lands all catfish in the paddies, it would run short of cold storage capacity. “Paddy rice crop is expected to reach 13 tons per hectare and we saved several tons of fertilizer which had to be spread on the five hectares for rice farming.”

The Kangan Farm in Unpha County turned nearly 10 hectares of paddy fields into those for fish farming and stocked them with many catfish fries this year. It now works to improve the scientific level of fish farming in paddy fields.

Fish farming in paddy fields is widely encouraged at farms in Kapsan County, a mountainous county, as well as many others including the Chilgol Vegetable Farm in Mangyongdae District, the Wonhwa Farm in Phyongwon County, the township farm in Sinchon County, the Yakjon Farm in Sukchon County, the Richon Farm in Sungho County and the Joyang Farm of the South Hamgyong Provincial Rural Economy Committee.

A unit increased the fattening rate of catfish over the industrial fish farming method as it confirmed the economic effectiveness of and scientific and technological guarantee for fish farming in paddy fields by combining scientific research and production practice in three years. As a result, it caught more than 70 tons of catfish per hectare and harvested 10 tons of rice per hectare at the low-yielding fields without using fertilizer.
