Variety of regional specialty products on constant increase
September 18, 2026The factories newly built in 40 cities and counties across the country according to the regional development policy of the Workers’ Party of Korea are directing efforts to the development and production of characteristic foodstuffs based on locally available raw materials.
The foodstuff factory in Kim Jong Suk County where forests cover over 90 percent of the total area produces various kinds of processed vegetables with edible herbs and supplies them to commercial networks.
Its pickled wild herbs which come in various kinds such as pickled bracken, Miricacalia peltifolia and aralia shoots are enjoying a growing demand for their distinctive flavour.
Since a new foodstuff factory was built in Kim Hyong Jik County, a mountainous county which had not benefited from its geographical characteristics, it has developed and produced various kinds of specialty products to give pleasure to study tourists and visitors.
The newly-built foodstuff factory in Rangnim County, Jagang Province, produces high-quality dehydrated starch noodles from potatoes, while the one in Sinyang County, an inland mountainous area in South Phyongan Province, turns out tara vine fruit and acorn jams as specialties representing the area.
A brisk competition for developing specialty products is going on at the foodstuff factories in Sinpho City and Hamju, Kumya, Jongphyong, Onchon and Sukchon counties bordering the sea and the seafood processing factories in Yomju and Orang Counties.
The Sinpho City Foodstuff Factory recently developed a kelp tea which is good for health and the Yomju County Seafood Processing Factory brought out more than 20 kinds of new specialty products, including vacuum-packed neck clams.
In particular, processed seafood of Hamju, Kumya, Onchon and Sukchon counties are winning popularity at retailers in the capital city, for they are fish, shellfish and seaweed from the east and west seas of Korea processed and packaged in distinctive ways.
Different kinds of rice cake bars made by the foodstuff factories in Jaeryong, Paechon, Sukchon and Yomju counties are winning favour with customers as specialty products of relevant areas.
The foodstuff factory in Kyongsong County, which has been widely known for the production of matrimony vine fruits from olden times, produces syrup, sweet jelly, biscuit, juice and hot pepper paste with the specialty product of its locality, while the one in Jangphung County develops and produces various kinds of distinctive foodstuffs with ginger and fruit of toothache tree widely cultivated in the county.
The new daily necessities factories in the 40 cities and counties are also developing specialty products with a growing enthusiasm.
The Jangphung County Daily Necessities Factory produces functional laundry soaps by using calamus abundant in the area. The sponge cucumber-flavoured laundry soap of the Usi County Daily Necessities Factory is highly appreciated by users.
Abacuses produced by the Hamju County Daily Necessities Factory are patronized by pupils of primary schools in the county and other parts of the province for their delicacy and high quality.
The daily necessities factory in Kaephung District, where sedge is widely cultivated, produces different kinds of grasswork and supplies them to Kaesong Municipality and other parts of the country.
Plastic chairs of the Songchon County Daily Necessities Factory and black stone craftworks of the Yomju County Daily Necessities Factory are getting popular not only in the counties but also in other different parts of the country.
Meanwhile, the garment factories newly built in the 40 cities and counties are working hard to increase the varieties of clothes that suit the likings of local people.
