Ebola virus spreads faster
October 4, 2026Recently, the World Health Organization announced that the outbreaks of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo have become ever more complicated due to its diverse modes of transmission.
Mortality rate is growing much higher than before.
The mortality rate of the community soared to 75% in a week from August 31 to September 6, an all-time high in weekly mortality so far recorded.
It was 56.6 % two weeks before.
The WHO has already said that the situation of the spread of the Ebola virus is serious in the DR Congo, warning that the virus spreads faster than before and it leads the outbreaks of the Ebola virus in West Africa between 2014 and 2016 in mortality rate. As if to prove it, the number of persons infected with and killed by it rapidly increases again.
On September 10, the number of confirmed cases went up to 7 022 and that of deaths to 3 398 in the country. Given that 3 802 confirmed cases and 1 707 deaths were reported on August 4, the number of infected cases and deaths that rapidly increased in only a little more than a month tells how fast the Ebola virus spreads.
The areas of its outbreaks also increased from five provinces a month ago to more than 60 areas in seven provinces.
Health experts attribute the increase in infected cases to the belated detection of infected cases, missing of contacts and failure to take timely countermeasures.
Reportedly, most infected cases and deaths were not found in the treatment centres, but in their homes and communities and among the people who were not on the roll of contacts.
Asserting that the Ebola virus spreads far beyond the scope of control, the WHO director-general said the situation became serious from the beginning and they have not yet kept up with it.
Describing the rapid spread of the epidemic as unprecedented, he said that refugees increase in number due to the unstable situations and the epidemic is spreading more rapidly than ever before due to their large-scale migrations through roads, rivers, underground passages and others.
The Ebola virus has aroused anxiety in many countries as it is highly likely to go beyond the DR Congo and spread to other countries.
Shortly ago, the killer virus was discovered in a passenger arriving in France, showing the possibility that it can be spread across the borders.
The WHO estimates that there are a very high risk that the Ebola virus will spread in the DR Congo in future and a high risk that it will spread to other countries, calling on all countries to further intensify anti-epidemic efforts.
