Natural monument—Stone river on Mt Okryon
October 13, 2026The Stone River on Mt Okryon is located in the upper reaches of a river valley flowing down the southwestern slope of the mountain with an altitude of 2 164m in Pujon County, South Hamgyong Province.
The stone river is a natural wonder which was formed as some of the rock masses on top of Mt Okryon moved along the river valley and is known as the biggest and rarest among Korean stone rivers.
The altitude of the stone river is about 1 850m and 1 460m at the starting and ending points respectively.
It is some 120m wide and 700m long and has a surface gradient of about 10 degrees. Though the water is invisible as it flows beneath the stones, the flowing sound is heard.
Stones are piled up 4-5m thick on average and 15-20m thick at the valley.
The edges of the stones are a bit worn. They are irregularly shaped and there are different sizes of cubic or plate stones.
The total length of the stone river is about 2km when the part covered with plants is added.
The stone river is under good preservation as a natural monument as it adds beauty to the mountain and is of academic significance in studying mountain glacier.
