The foreign ministers of the Commonwealth of Independent States adopted a joint statement “On maintaining practical measures to prevent arms race in outer space” on October 7.

At the end of a meeting of the council of foreign ministers of the CIS held in Turkmenistan, foreign ministers of Russia, Belarus and other member states signed the joint statement.

The statement expressed serious concern over the fact that an arms race in outer space is becoming a reality and that outer space is turning into an arena of military confrontation leading to global instability.

It said that the deployment of any weapon in outer space and the use of arms or threat by arms against space objects must be prohibited in order to prevent serious risks to international peace and security.

It also said that it is unacceptable to use the space system and its associated ground infrastructure for purposes other than ensuring international peace and security and strengthening trust between nations, stressing that it is very important to take practical measures immediately to prevent the space arms race.
