Russia warns of countermeasure against Lithuania’s move to nuclear deployment
October 15, 2026The Lithuanian parliament on October 6 passed a constitutional amendment to remove the provision prohibiting the deployment of weapons of mass destruction including nuclear weapons.
In the vote, 106 out of the 141 members of the parliament voted in favour.
However, for a constitutional amendment, the parliament must vote twice and more than 94 of the 141 MPs must vote for it each time.
The next vote will reportedly take place in January 2027.
On the same day, the Russian presidential press secretary Dmitri Peskov warned that the deployment of NATO military bases and nuclear weapons in Lithuania would aggravate the tension, adding that Russia would take all necessary measures to ensure its security reliably.
Foreign media expressed concern over the recent increase in the moves towards nuclear arms in Europe, including Finland’s introduction of a law amendment allowing it to import nuclear weapons and France’s announcement of an increase in the number of nuclear warheads.
