The designs presented by lecturers and students of the interior and furniture design department of Faculty of Architecture No. 2 of Pyongyang University of Architecture were highly appreciated at the 23rd May 21 Architecture Festival held in May.

The department encourages them to create the designs of all structures to be unique and intensively reflect the mission, purposes and characters of the objects. And it develops and applies the new methods of architectural composition and decoration of Korean style on the basis of an in-depth study of the world trend of architectural development.

Various designs produced by the department have been widely introduced into the projects for the regional development policy of the Workers’ Party of Korea. They include the construction method of utilizing roof space of public buildings in the mountainous area, the method of composition of internal functional space of public buildings in a unique style, the method of metaphorically highlighting the national character with colour decoration on columns, the colouring and illumination method for highlighting national character in indoor space and the model of an integrated office building.

Many designing methods and designs invented by the faculty have been registered as scientific and technological successes and highly appreciated at national sci-tech presentations in the field of construction and industrial design exhibitions.

The department also devises and widely introduces teaching methods conducive to improving the knowledge of students. For example, the teaching method using virtual experience in a double-sided indoor model in the joint review of designs has been introduced and generalized across the country as it proves highly effective in enhancing the students’ ability to form the interior.

Today, the students of the department competitively present new and unique designs to the exhibition of architectural designs held on various occasions at the university. In February last year, Choe Un Gyu, a student of the university, presented an essay on the design method for preserving the national identity by means of lighting apparatus and illumination in indoor space to a science forum sponsored by Astrakhan State University of Russia, drawing attention of the academic circles.

“It is the ambition of all teachers, researchers and students of our department to positively contribute to making ours the architecture based on the people-first principle both in name and reality by reflecting the aesthetic sense of the times and the aspirations and demands of the people,” said Kim Ho Nam, section chief of the department.
