November 3, 2026

Footprint fossils of dinosaurs in Ryonggung-ri were discovered in the 1980s.

They are located in Phyongsan County of North Hwanghae Province.

The rock where the fossils were discovered is about 100 metres long and 15 metres wide and has a slope of about 20 degrees.

The footprints of dinosaurs are clearly visible in two rows on the rock, 14 in one row and 16 in the other.

Each of the 14 footprints in a row is about 45cm long, 40cm wide and 4cm deep and the distance between the right and left footprints is 80 to 90cm.

These 14 footprints have roughly 20cm-long traces of its foot having slightly touched the mud surface when the dinosaur treaded on the ground.

Each of the 16 footprints in the other row shows only the outlines of their soles and is about 40 to 45cm long and 35 to 38cm wide and the distance between the footprints is roughly 55 to 65cm. All these footprints show no traces of digits and claws. It is believed that their traces might be filled up with mud because the area was muddy at that time.

Fossils of various plants were also found in the vicinity of the place where the footprint fossils of dinosaurs were discovered and a lot of fossils of shellfish, mud-snails and plants in a place 2 to 3km away from the area.

The footprint fossils of dinosaurs in Ryonggung-ri are under good protection and management as a natural monument of great palaeontological significance, as they prove that a large number of big dinosaurs lived in Korea in the Mesozoic era.
