Mounting protest against constitutional revision in Japan

April 29, 2026

The Japanese public is getting more vociferous against the authorities' moves to revise the constitution retrogressively.

A rally was staged against the constitutional revision again near the Diet building in Tokyo on April 19, attracting nearly 36 000 people, which far exceeded the turnout in the previous one on April 8.

The participants protested against the authorities' attempt to revise the "pacifist constitution" for the worse despite the public opposition, carrying placards reading, "We oppose war", "Don't destroy Article 9 of the constitution" and "Takaichi, step down".

They accused the current authorities of scheming to turn Japan into a country that can fight a war.
