Russia designated the Gagarin Order as a new state commendation.

The relevant decree of the Russian President was announced on May 27.

According to it, the order is to be awarded to meritorious persons in the field of space flight, for example, those who have succeeded in manned space flight. 

It is also awarded to those who have made distinguished achievements in training scientists, technicians and other experts of the field, developing, producing, testing and normally operating rockets and space technical equipment, developing and introducing new technologies and conducting relevant research.

Another criterion for awarding the order is related to the feats performed in implementing the state policies on space field for the defence and security of the country and others.

It will also be reportedly awarded to organizations which have achieved great success in space activities.
